Twin Cities Bike Map [paper]
Published since 1984, the Twin Cities Bike Map is updated every three years to reflect the ever-changing Twin Cities landscape for bicyclists. The 9th edition, new for 2008, incorporates the best features of previous editions, such as a detailed map of the core cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul on one side and a larger scale map of the entire Twin Cities Metro on the other.
It also has detailed maps of select small towns (Excelsior, Hastings, Hopkins Stillwater, White Bear Lake,) where navigation would be difficult at the larger scale. Nearly every road in the Twin Cities has been included on the map, but the minor roads have been grayed out and minimized. They’ll give you a feel for the area you are traveling through, but probably won’t be visible enough to guide you off the highlighted bike routes.
All suggested bike roads and trails have been incorporated into a network. The very few “Dead End” routes included on the maps are there because they stop at an interesting destination, such as a park, or the road itself is scenic and worth riding, even if you have to turn around and come back the same way you went out.
So What’s New? Start with the paper, it’s tear and water resistant Polyart paper. Now you can carry it in your sweaty jersey pocket, fold it the wrong way or drop it in a mud puddle. It will hold up to just about anything.
The heart of every update is the hundreds of changes, large and small, that reflect the evolving landscape of Twin Cities bicycling. Big changes, such as the completion of the Mid-town Greenway to the Mississippi River and the bike trail on the new Wakouta Bridge over the Mississippi River have been included, but also minute changes such as a re-route through the town of St. Michael in the northwest corner of the metro area, or noting that Conway St. no longer connects in the tiny town of Landfall, therefore a new route was created. This year I kept a detailed log of the changes.
