First published in 2005 as the “Capitol City Bike Map,” this second edition has been renamed to better reflect the area covered by the map.It incorporates the best features of the earlier edition, such as the detailed map of urban Madison on one side, the large scale Dane County map on the other side and a detailed insert of Sun Prairie. The routes still form a complete network. The very few “Dead End” bike routes on the map are there because they stop at interesting destinations, such as a parks.

So What’s New? Start with the paper, it’s tear and water resistant Polyart paper. Now you can carry it in your sweaty jersey pocket, fold it the wrong way or drop it in a mud puddle. It will hold up to just about anything.

We’ve tweaked the urban map by orienting it slightly further south to help with navigation through the developed area between County Road PD and Lacy Rd and we’ve made the bike trails more prominent.

The Dane County side of the map has been expanded to include a few miles of eastern Iowa County. (We had a little extra white space on the first edition and decided to put it to good use.
All of the roads in Dane County are shown, including those in the small towns, but the minor roads have been grayed out and minimized to reduce clutter.

Those are the big changes. The heart of every update is the hundreds of tweaks, large and small, that reflect the ever changing landscape of Madison area bicycling: Adding new or extended bike trails, mapping new connectors, labeling more streets, adding or changing routes to reflect traffic changes.
