Gitchi-Gami Trail

Gitchi Gami State Trail

The best views of Lake Superior you will get from the seat of a bicycle.

$4.25

The trail is being built piecemeal as part of the reconstruction of Highway 61. The longest section, 14.3 miles, runs from Gooseberry Falls State Park to Beaver Bay and dips into Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. A short, but scenic, section follows the road bed of Old Hwy 61 around the Silver Creek Tunnel and offers stunning views of Lake Superior and the occasional distraction of watching rock climbers. We spent the week of the 4th up on the North Shore. The Gitchi Gami got a brand new extension north up and over the Onion River. It doesn’t quite reach the Lutsen Resort yet, but they have bridge with no trail connection over the Poplar River and are clearly headed that way. I took some pictures and loaded them to Flickr, have a look
